Rosario is one of the largest cities in Argentina and an important economic and cultural center located along the western bank of the Paraná River. The city has an estimated population of about 1,057,320 inhabitants (2026 estimate). Founded in the early 18th century, Rosario grew rapidly during the 19th and early 20th centuries as a major agricultural export hub due to its strategic river port. Although it was never formally founded like many colonial cities, it developed around a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary, from which it takes its name.
Rosario is closely associated with Argentine national history: the national flag was first raised here in 1812 by General Manuel Belgrano. This event is commemorated by the monumental National Flag Memorial, one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Other notable sites include the Rosario Cathedral and the scenic Parque de la Independencia. Rosario is also the birthplace of several internationally known figures, including football legends Lionel Messi and Ángel Di María, as well as revolutionary leader Che Guevara.
