Turin has an estimated population of about 857,190 inhabitants (2026 estimate). Located in northwestern Italy near the Alps and the Po River, Turin is the capital of the Piedmont region and one of the country’s most important historical and industrial centers. The city was originally a Celtic settlement before becoming the Roman colony of Augusta Taurinorum in the 1st century BCE. During the Middle Ages and early modern period, Turin grew in importance under the House of Savoy and later became the first capital of the unified Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865. In the 20th century, it developed into a major industrial hub, particularly with the rise of the automotive industry led by Fiat.
Turin is renowned for its elegant architecture and cultural landmarks, including the Mole Antonelliana, the Royal Palace, and the Egyptian Museum, one of the most important museums of Egyptian antiquities outside Egypt. The city is also the birthplace of notable figures such as writer Primo Levi and singer-songwriter Carla Bruni.
