Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina and serves as the country's political, economic, and cultural center. The city has an estimated population of about 3,152,780 inhabitants (2026 estimate). Located on the western shore of the Río de la Plata estuary, Buenos Aires was first founded by the Spanish in 1536 and permanently established in 1580. During the colonial period it developed into a major port linking South America with Europe. In the 19th century, the city played a central role in Argentina’s independence movement and later became a rapidly growing metropolis fueled by immigration, particularly from Italy and Spain.

Buenos Aires is known for its European-influenced architecture and vibrant cultural life. Among its most famous landmarks are the Plaza de Mayo, the historic Casa Rosada, and the grand Teatro Colón, one of the world’s leading opera houses.
