Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia and one of Spain’s most important cultural and economic centers, with a population of 1,731,649 inhabitants. Located on the northeastern Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, the city has played a significant role in the history of the western Mediterranean.

Founded as the Roman colony of Barcino in the 1st century BC, Barcelona later became a major medieval port and an important political center of the Crown of Aragon. The city experienced rapid industrial growth during the 19th century and played a central role in the Spanish Civil War. Since the late 20th century, Barcelona has undergone major urban renewal, notably in preparation for the 1992 Olympic Games.

Barcelona is internationally known for its architectural heritage, particularly the works of Antoni Gaudí, including the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Casa Batlló, as well as its historic Gothic Quarter and the boulevard of La Rambla. The city has also been the birthplace of notable figures such as artist Joan Miró, opera singer Montserrat Caballé, and novelist Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Today, Barcelona is a major destination for tourism, culture, education, and international trade.
