Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile, located in the country’s central valley between the Andes Mountains and the Chilean Coastal Range. It serves as Chile’s main political, financial, and cultural center. The metropolitan area has a population of roughly 7,727,380 inhabitants (2026 estimate). Santiago was founded on 12 February 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia and gradually developed into the administrative heart of colonial Chile. After Chile gained independence in the early nineteenth century, the city expanded rapidly and became the country’s primary hub for government, commerce, and education.

Santiago is known for its mix of colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, and historic neighborhoods. Important landmarks include the historic square Plaza de Armas, the presidential palace La Moneda Palace, and the hilltop park Cerro San Cristóbal overlooking the city. Santiago has also produced internationally known cultural figures and athletes, including footballer Arturo Vidal, actress Leonor Varela, and acclaimed writer Roberto Bolaño, whose works and careers have contributed to Chile’s global cultural presence.
