San José is the largest city in Northern California and the economic center of Silicon Valley, one of the world’s leading technology hubs. Founded in 1777 as El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, it was the first civilian settlement in Spanish California and later became the state’s first capital after independence from Mexico.
