It serves as the capital of Fukuoka Prefecture and is one of Japan’s most important regional economic and cultural centers. Historically, the area developed from two separate towns: the port town of Hakata, an important gateway for trade with mainland Asia since ancient times, and the castle town of Fukuoka, established in the early 17th century by the Kuroda clan. The modern city was officially formed in 1889 and has grown into a dynamic urban hub known for technology startups and international exchanges.
